A kind of truce

After a restless night where sleep evaded me, I walked into a quiet office. Opening the door to my office, I looked back at the open plan area, hoping to see Abby. The events of the evening before were stuck on replay in my head all night, as I tried to figure out what Abby was upset about. I was pretty sure it was because I liked that woman’s profile, but I didn’t understand why. Abby had all but told me to like it. Why be upset then?

Rolling my eyes as I set up my laptop, I said, “Ugh. Women.”

“Care to elaborate on that?” Abby asked.

Looking up, I said “Hi” softly, afraid that if I spoke louder, she would bolt.

“Hi,” she said back and leaned against the doorway.

Her hair was hanging loose around her shoulders. She was wearing a very feminine white blouse with a floral print in shades of brown and pink. It hinted at her curves as it draped over tight white jeans held up with a brown belt. Short, light brown boots rounded off her outfit. She crossed her arms and said, “Thanks for last night. I appreciate you taking the time to show me your designs.”

“Technically, I should have helped you more yesterday. I’ll try to be better.” I smiled at her.

“So, what did all these women do to you?” Abby asked, raising her eyebrows and steering the conversation back to my frustrated mumbling.

“You know, I just don’t understand them. That’s all.”

“What happened? Maybe I can shed some light on the situation for you.”

After a moment of hesitation, I decided to lay it all out.

“Okay. Hypothetically speaking, if someone told you to do something, and you did it, and then she was upset with you afterward, would that make sense to you?” I asked.

“What were you asked to do?” she inquired.

“The details don’t matter, it’s all hypothetical.”

“Okay, hypothetically speaking, would doing this thing hurt her feelings?” she asked.

“That would depend on whether there were any feelings involved, I suppose.” My brow creased.

“This is why details matter. Okay, let’s see. If hypothetically speaking, you were asked to like someone’s profile on a dating app, and you did, that could be seen as somewhat disappointing.”

She knew exactly what I was talking about.

“Why?” I turned my head to the side. “Hypothetically speaking, of course, why would this be seen as disappointing?”

“Maybe this person didn’t know that she had feelings for you, and she was not prepared for how she felt when you pressed the like button. Hypothetically speaking, of course.”

“Abby…” My voice trailed off. “We can’t…”

“I know, I know. I just wanted to apologize for the way I behaved last night. It wasn’t fair to you.”

The sincerity in her voice and the sadness on her face hit me right in the feels. She was nothing like Lisa.

“Don’t worry about it.”

She smiled and tried to sound excited as she said, “Okay, let’s focus on work from hereon out. I have so many things to learn, and according to Cynthia, you are the best.
