CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Christian didn’t call irst thing the next morning. He didn’t even call when he left the house around ten to make good on the plans to add some art to the walls. At some point in the middle of a sleepless night he decided he wasn’t going to waste money on artwork that everybody could have. Instead, he was going to do all of it himself.

It had been years since he drew anything that hadn’t ended up on his body, so he was a little nervous as he dug through the standing displays of white canvas and stared down the mile-long aisles of oil pastels at the art supply store. He shook his head. No. He didn’t want to work with oils.

Walking farther into the store he found notebooks illed with watercolor and pastel paper, but when he saw the bottles of India Ink, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He threw only three colors into his basket, then found the best paper he could. The last time he worked with India Ink was in a high school and he’d used these weird old-fashioned pens he hated. Today he chose a new set of brushes that would be perfect for what he had in mind. After he splurged on an easel and mounting boards, he tossed everything in the back seat of the hummer and drove home.

He didn’t call Kevin then, either. The entire time he was out shopping he told himself to ignore the burdensome weight sitting on his chest. He pretended that he wasn’t sick inside because this relationship was going to be snuffed out.

You’re still young , he reminded himself even though it wasn’t helpful. Kevin wasn’t the only man in the world, but Christian was having trouble seeing past him. Six years of fantasies and seven days of highs, lows, and too many questions. Why was any of this a shock? Until now, all of Christian’s disappointment had settled on its rightful bearer— himself. Yet, last night, after Selena caught them kissing, he realized that he was disappointed in Kevin, too. No matter how unfair that was.

He didn’t have the right to expect anything other than Kevin protecting himself; they weren’t a couple. If Christian were in Kev’s place, he wouldn’t want Selena yammering to his little sister, telling secrets that weren’t hers to tell. Yet, there was a moment when Christian saw Selena standing there that he hoped Kevin would react differently. It was senseless to be so surprised. A shared kiss six years ago didn’t make Christian come out, that was for damned sure. Their kiss last night didn’t mean Kevin had to take that leap, either.

Sensible or not, though, he was aching. At least he was being honest about it for once. Christian made himself a mega-sized chocolate milk—his version of comfort—and took it out to the back porch where he’d set up his easel. It was going to rain, but the small patio was covered.

He spent twenty minutes sketching a basic design and as he was about to start in with the black ink, his cell phone rang.
