Chapter Twenty-Nine

Kate climbed down the small plane’s steps into the sweltering late afternoon heat, then Whiskey bolted across the tarmac to the nearest bush. A string of dark storm clouds hovered slightly north of them. Debris still lined the fields to either side of the runway, and the wide hangar’s roof still lay curled back, leaving its contents at the mercy of the elements.

Lucia waited in the front seat of a small extended cab pickup truck parked near the airport’s one-room office. Kate waved to her as she pulled the truck around and backed it up to the plane’s cargo hatch.

Kara hugged her sister. “Your eyes are still swollen and red. You didn’t have to come get us. We could have found our way up to the village.”

“It gave me something to do. Better than sitting up there staring at the charred remains of my life.”

“Can anything be salvaged?”

The smaller woman shrugged. “I didn’t stay very long. It was …” She took a long, deep breath.

Kate wrapped her arm around Lucia’s shoulder as Kara began unloading supplies for residents of the village who still had no power or running water. “It’s okay. You’ve been through too much already. We’ll drive you back to Señora Gutierrez’s house, you can help hand out water and supplies to your friends in the village while we go and see what’s left, okay?”

Lucia nodded, her eyes focused on the storm clouds in the distance. Kate helped her into the back seat while William and Kara loaded three small gas-powered generators into the truck’s bed.

“William, I think if we unbox those and drop Kara off with Lucia, the two of us can get up to her place, box anything that’s left, and get back down within an hour or so, can’t we?”

“Yeah, but we need to hurry if we’re going to beat that storm.”

“Okay. We can stop by the university to drop off the zemí on the way back down. They’ll make sure it gets catalogued and returned to the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs.”

Kate tossed the last few cases of water into the back of the truck and piled into the back with Lucia. The truck’s gears made a loud grinding sound as William shifted it into first.

“Helps if you use the clutch.”

“I am using the clutch, Katherine. I’ve been driving a stick since before you were born, young lady.”

Kate flicked her finger at his graying temples. “I’m sure you have, old man. But those gears are still grinding.”

Lucia tried to laugh. “This old truck has seen a thing or two, too. Sometimes it needs time to get used to a new driver.”

They drove up into the mountains and quickly unloaded the water and generators in the center of town, leaving Kara and Lucia to help distribute the supplies to the villagers. Kate jumped into the driver’s seat as William unloaded the last of the supplies, then he climbed into the passenger seat.

“Maybe it’ll like me a little better.” She popped the truck into gear then zipped up the mountain to Lucia’s place.
