I have slept.

For the first time since this started, I recall dreaming.

I keep a dream diary at home.

How many nights I have lost!

I am standing in a long shadowed gallery. Someone says out of the dark, ‘The children are burning, be aware!’

I look down and see a dead head, clearly dead because it was tautskinned, browned, mummified. As I look, a thousand tiny rays of light beam out as though minute holes or the very pores of the skin are emitting light. Like a strange jackolantern and not terrible at all.

A gentle voice says

‘As well as being initiation into mysteries, as well as being social demarcations, they are to be considered times of getting to know yourself, learning intimately your capacity for pain, your outer limits of endurance.’

There is a smell of chalkdust.

The head smiles at me and the teeth grow longer, the lips paler and thicker. It bleats at me. It is a sheepshead.

I woke shaking.

I have been thinking deeply about this dream.

I feel—not quite present.

I feel very ill.

I cannot stop shaking.
