Chapter Four

Bree

“What?” Bree stared up at Matthias.

“I need to hunt again to provision us through the rest of the storm,” Matthias said. He still held his hand out for Bree to take and waited patiently for him to make up his mind. “Rabbits or ptarmigan are all we’re likely to find, but I don’t mind that. It’ll do you good to get out for a little while.”

Bree wasn’t too sure about that. He’d never tried leaving the cabin while he was in heat. Why would he? It would have been like waving a red flag for any Alpha who cared to try and chase him down. And yet…

Now that he thought about it, Bree wanted to run. His limbs ached from inactivity, and the air in the cabin seemed too stuffy, too still, too close. He bit his lip, hesitating.

“It will help. Trust me, I’ve seen it.” Matthias grinned ruefully. “Well. Not up close and personal. I haven’t been with another Omega since I left. But the mated men I fished with always had stories to tell, and there were a couple of bonded pairs who worked the sea together.”

Bree barely heard the last part of that. Matthias hadn’t been with another Omega since him? Truly?

Matthias must have seen the wondering in Bree’s eyes. He inclined his head. “Not one, and not once, Bree. They couldn’t compare to you. I didn’t even want to try.”

Bree shut his eyes. He ached to shed his human form and take to four legs. To run and burn off some of the mad energy that drove him.

It was just…

“Come on,” Matthias coaxed. Since Bree hadn’t taken it, he laid his hand on Bree’s shoulder and squeezed gently. “If I’m wrong, you can take your best shot at me afterward. No reprisal. But I’ll bet you anything you want to wager that I’m right.”

Bree opened his eyes.

* * *

He was right.

Melting into his wolf shape felt -- orgasmic wasn’t the right word, nor strong enough, but Bree couldn’t think of a better one. He arched his back and panted with the sheer rightness of the feeling, then shook himself so hard he nearly knocked himself off his paws.

Nearby, Matthias laughed at him as wolves did, with his tongue lolling and tail wagging. He bounced on his forepaws and yipped at Bree.

Bree wrinkled his muzzle at Matthias, then shot forward and nipped at his flanks -- and ran the way his wolf form wanted to, fast as the wind, free as the air. His limbs stretched in an agony of exquisite sensation and the ground flew past beneath him.

From behind, he heard Matthias’s delighted bark and a scrabble of paws as he bounded forward. Bree glanced back once and saw the Alpha keeping just behind him, guarding his six. He feinted as if he too were going to deliver a play bite, but clashed his teeth together on the air instead.

Bree couldn’t help it. He laughed too, inside his head and in the body language of the wolf.
