With help from Lorthredo and Montaug, Termedes was able to repair the glider in just two days. He made a slight alteration to the design, adding a small tail fin on the rear of the glider. "It will increase the drag somewhat, but it will be worth the added stability," he declared.
When it was ready, the brothers hauled the glider to the runway once more and Carneilia strapped herself into the harness. This time, none of them tried to dissuade her from the task.
Once again, Lorthredo and Montaug helped tow Carneilia and the glider down the runway, and, once again, it went sailing into the air. This time, however, they watched as Carneilia was able to avoid the initial plummet downward. She maintained a steady flight for several minutes, making turns every which way and vastly improving her piloting skills. The glider started to descend lazily, but Carneilia was able to use the persistent updraft around the mountain to bring her high above her original elevation. She was like a bird in the sky, and, if the winds remained steady, she could stay aloft indefinitely.
After about fifteen minutes, Carneilia steered the glider back towards the clearing at the top of the runway and began her final descent. She came in smooth and steady, but with considerable speed. Just before touching down, she started to run forward with the glider to avoid being dragged along and injured. As she did this, she accidentally pushed forward on the horizontal bar in front of her, abruptly raising the nose of the glider. It caught the wind, slowing her speed significantly while also lifting her up a few feet higher. The glider suddenly stalled in the air with the nose pointing almost straight up into the sky. Then it dropped to the ground, snapping the small tail fin in two, and Carneilia landed hard on her feet.
Elated, she was quick to free herself from the safety straps, while the three males walked over with wide, cheerful grins upon their faces. "It's perfect!" she cheered. "And next time I think I'll be able to land without damaging the glider at all! With just a little more practice, the three of us will be able to glide well enough for our plan!"
"The three of us?" asked Lorthredo. "Why do we need to know how to pilot the glider?"
"Because, all three of us need to make it inside Barthos' palace, and this glider only holds one person." She then turned to Termedes, "This means you'll need to create two more gliders."
Termedes waved his hand dismissively, "It will take some time."
"And they'll need to be able to carry more weight," she replied, glancing at the brothers, who stood three whole docubits* over her.
"Oh, they will," Termedes assured her. He was proud of his work.
"And you can leave out the towing ropes this time," she added.
The three males looked at her.
"We need to be able to take off from the ground by ourselves," she said, "and, from what I just experienced, I'm sure we can do it.
