hour had passed Longarm was mounted and on the trail north to Holbrook.

Longarm reined in his horse to let the tiring animal rest. This was the third day he'd been in a strange saddle, jolted after having ridden from early that morning until now, when the rays of the low declining sun were about to give way to darkness. When it felt the reins tighten, the horse tossed its head as it halted and snorted vigorously, its nostrils dilating as it inhaled.

^'If you were sniffing because you smell fresh water, I'd sure like to know it," Longarm told the animal. "Good water that ain't alkalied. But seeing as you ain't even trying to move, I doubt you're smelling water, so I'll just have to do the best I can for you myself."

Dismounting, Longarm took the canteen that was lashed by saddlestrings to the pommel of his saddle. It weighed less than he'd anticipated. He took two small swallows, sloshing the water in his mouth for a moment and relishing the wetness in spite of its warmth and alkaline taste.

Taking off his hat, Longarm held it by the tip of its crown while he poured in most of the water remaining in his canteen. He capped the canteen carefully and let it drop to the ground, then stepped up to the horse's head. Pushing the hat over the animal's nose, he held it in place until the few faint slurping noises ended and the horse lifted its head.

Shaking the hat to remove the droplets of water that remained in it, he replaced it on his head and secured the canteen to its improvised cradle of saddlestrings. He swung into the well-worn saddle and toed the horse into a steady walk. It was the same slow pace he'd kept the
