Cultural Capital

Now that construction is near completion, there is great anticipation about the collection to be displayed inside the Abu Dhabi Louvre. Paintings from the holdings of the Paris Louvre are of course promised, but it will be interesting to see if canvases from the city hosting this major new gallery will find wall space too. There is a growing number of talented Emirati artists and their work is beginning to attract international attention; however, it is fair to say that painting is a relatively nascent genre in the region.

Portable, Practical Crafts

Crafts have traditionally been a more notable art form in the Gulf, thanks in part to a partially Bedouin heritage. The nomadic pre-oil lifestyle of part of the population dictated a life refined of excess baggage, so creativity found its most obvious expression in poetry, song, storytelling and portable, practical crafts.

In crafts such as jewellery, silversmithing, weaving, embroidery and basketry, function and form combine in artefacts that document a way of life. Take the heavy silver so distinctively worn by Bedouin women, which is designed not just as a personal adornment but as a form of portable wealth. Silver amulets contained rolled pieces of parchment or paper bearing protective inscriptions from the Quran to guarantee the safety of the wearer. These were considered useful against the perils of the evil eye – the envy or malice of others.
