MT ELWELL

On the opposite side of Gold Lake from Mill’s Peak, Elwell is an altogether chunkier proposition. It’s not a trail to be tackled unless you’re a skilled and confident rider, comfortable with technical rock gardens, drops and steep turns coming at you from the outset. The trail mellows out lower down and sections can be walked if necessary. It will help if you’re also able to make basic bike fixes (broken derailleurs, punctures and the like). But go with a group (for reassurance) and expand your boundaries. The reward will be classic Sierra scenery with Feather River to the north and the Lakes Basin to the south. Most riders climb up from the south and descend to the north, all the way from the granite peak, through old-growth forest to Graeagle. Guided rides are available from Yuba Expeditions in Downieville.
