10 BLENHEIM

Servicing the viticultural endeavours that carpet most of the Wairau Plains between the Wither Hills and Richmond Ranges, Blenheim is a bustling town with a fairly farmy, workaday feel. In recent years, however, town beautification projects and wine industry spin-offs (such as decent places to eat and pubs you can take your children to) are inching Blenheim closer to a fully fledged tourist town. Threatening to blow the wine out of the water is the brilliant Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre (omaka.org.nz). It houses a collection of original and replica Great War and WWII aircraft, brought to life in a series of lifelike dioramas (created by associates of Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson, who also owns the centre’s Great War collection), depicting dramatic wartime scenes such as the demise of the Red Baron. Budding aces can take to the skies on vintage biplane flights.

THE DRIVE

Head north on SH1 for 28km to return to Picton. After leaving the wide Wairau Plains, the views narrow as you head up the Tuamarina Valley and past the Para Wetlands towards the Marlborough Sounds.
