Chapter Twelve

There was embarrassed, and then there was being-called-out-by-a-brother embarrassed. Trent was used to neither. He couldn’t remember a time when he had been more self-conscious than he was right then, being stripped down verbally by AJ Spade—a man he had never met.

“What do you want, AJ?” Kendra asked.

Though Kendra looked put together and willing to stand up to her brother, Trent was having one hell of a time trying to cover up his discomfort. Both physical and mental.

“I just heard about your run-in with the senator,” AJ said, finally looking at Trent’s face and seeing him for something more than the man who was trying to bed his sister. “You got your ass kicked.”

Trent nodded. “Yeah, but your sister got the senator’s date to safety.” What he didn’t mention was that it had also led to them being in the room where they currently were standing. If getting his ass beat meant that he got to spend one more night alone in proximity to Kendra Spade, he’d gladly take another hit.

“Did you see what was happening on social media?” AJ asked.

Kendra shook her head. “Before we get any more into this, I’m going to go get dressed.”

AJ nodded. “Please do.” Venom dripped from his words.

Crap. He didn’t regret the direction he and Kendra had been taking things, but he didn’t want to be in this room alone with AJ. Nothing good would come of that. Before he tried to come up with some excuse to get away from the man, Kendra took him by the arm. “And he’ll be coming with me.”

He wasn’t one to be shuffled around, but for once he was glad just to follow directions. “Be right back,” he said with the tilt of the head.

AJ’s scowl deepened. “I’m not going to stand here and wait for you guys to do whatever it is you’re gonna do. I’ll meet you in the hotel lobby. You better not be more than five minutes.” He turned to the door and stormed out, letting it bang shut behind him.

Kendra sighed. “Well, that was my brother AJ. And now you know why I wasn’t in a hurry to go back to my family ranch.”

“He is never going to like me.”

Kendra shrugged. “If I was concerned about my brother and his opinion on my life, and the people I choose to bring into it, that would’ve given me a nonrefundable ticket to the psychiatric ward.” She laughed. “You know...most people fear their fathers and the judgment of their parents, but growing up I was always most concerned with what AJ thought of me. Thankfully, I’ve outgrown it. Not to mention the fact that I intentionally isolated myself from this family years ago.”

“I’m sure your brother loves you and only wants the best for you, and undoubtedly that includes the men you date. I just wish he and I could’ve gotten off to a better start.” As he spoke, he realized he was referring to the future—one that he and Kendra had never even talked about.
