Romeo and Juliet at the Old Vic

A clear flame

now still

now trembling

on the empty stage

Desire remote to us

thirteen year olds

from shabby Walthamstow

tittering in the balcony.

I, fierce, hissing in the dark

‘Shut up, you fools’

yearned through shafts of light

to that white face

that fluting bird’s voice

passion snared

Tearless, rapt

with secret flowering grief

I stumbled down stone steps

vowed to beauty & to love

Death? We knew

the mimic lovers rose again.

The long and little deaths of love

we could not know,

not Juliet, nor us

nor that young actress

famous now,

ageing, twice divorced

burning still

beyond her brilliant masks
