The second fear is deeply ingrained in a nonfighter and never comes into play until one overcomes fear of harm. I have noticed that women and male martial artists with whom I have trained show a high degree of flinching, hesitation, and other signs of inhibited aggression. If you have never feared harming your adversary in a gym bout, athletic contest, or brawl, you are either insane or stonecold cruel, or you have never overcome your primary selfish fear of injury.
