Hal Brognola wasn’t a Stony Man commando, but he had survived more than his share of danger. He had been shot at. He had nearly been blown to bits. He’d had cutthroats come at him with knives, chains and clubs. Not once had he flinched. Not once had he been completely overcome by the raw fear that spiked through him now.
Dr. Bellamy was slowly rising from the couch. Ghastly bloodshot eyes gazed at each person in the room in turn, as if he were trying to make up his mind which one to attack. From his open mouth trickled a steady stream of drool, and from deep in his chest came a rumbling growl more befitting a leopard than a human being.
Lucy Reese screamed.
Instantly Bellamy spun and lunged. Reese backpedaled, but she wasn’t quite fast enough and Bellamy’s hooked fingers snagged her jacket.
Brognola was compelled to act. He would be the first to admit he wasn’t necessarily the bravest man in the world, but neither was he a rank coward. When someone was in peril, his natural impulse was to do what he could to help them. So without thinking, he hurled himself at the deranged scientist.
With a speed Brognola would never imagine Bellamy possessed, the doctor swung a bony fist in a vicious swipe. Brognola brought his arms up, blocking the blow, but it was still powerful enough to lift him clean off his feet and send him crashing against the wall.
Luther Harkin and Tim Wells were glued where they stood, but Bryce Chandler heaved out of his chair and moved to place himself between Bellamy and Reese. His leg hampered him, and before he could reach them, the scientist bent her back and opened his mouth wide to take a bite out of the woman’s neck.
“No!” Reese cried.
Brognola cast wildly about for a weapon. Wells chose that moment to break his paralysis and leap onto Bellamy’s back, locking his arms around the older man’s. With frightening ease, Bellamy shook him off, then bent anew toward Reese.
By then Chandler had reached them. He punched Bellamy to try to distract him and was rewarded for his effort with a fist to the chest that knocked him back into the chair he had risen from. Chandler and the chair performed a somersault.
Reese was struggling to break free, but she was powerless against Bellamy’s bioenhanced might. He pinned her against the wall, snarled hideously, and poised for a lethal bite.
It was now or never. Brognola launched himself into a driving run, pumping his legs as he had on the gridiron in his youth. He struck from the side to take Bellamy by surprise. His right shoulder slammed into the scientist’s hip, momentum succeeding where his own strength wouldn’t. Bellamy was flung a dozen feet, tripped over a table and toppled.
Seizing Reese by the arm, Brognola pushed her toward Wells. “Get out of here! Both of you!”
The door was already wide open; Luther Harkin had fled. Brognola turned to help Chandler out from under the chair, but his friend was already rising.
