SEÁN

Chapter 44

The doctor diagnosed postpartum depression and put her on medication. Seán apologised and never hit her again. It didn’t come easy to him but he managed to bite his tongue whenever he felt a reproach coming on. Sometimes when a sentence managed to escape he would rescue the criticism halfway and turning it on its head translated it into something more positive.

“What’s that smell? Did you not . . .” He turned his attention to Mary Jo. “Have you a stinky little bottie? We’ll have to tell your mammy, won’t we, so she can do something about it?”

From a shaky start, with a little practice he had become good with the baby. Once she began to take notice and respond he got even better.

“She’s smiling at me. Did you see that, Bridie? She gave me a smile. That’s her first.”

Bridie came across to take a look.

“Ah, you know your daddy, don’t you now?” He beamed back at her. “Say bye-bye now, baby! Your daddy has to go off to work.” He continued waving, watching her smile, as he backed out of the kitchen. “I’ll be home about six, Bridie. See you all later.” And with a final blown kiss to Mary Jo he was off.
