At least Howie hadn't been lying. It really had been the flu, not the M.D." and he was once again as healthy as ever.

Or as healthy as he eve got.

Jim felt a little guilty for not spending more time with his friend. He hadn't really neglected Howie since he and Faith had started going out, but the amount of time they spent together had been drastically cut down, and though Howie professed understanding and claimed that it didn't bother him, Jim knew that it had to hurt.

He'd make it up to Howie. Somehow.

Jim took out his key ring, found the key to his room, and unlocked the door. "This is it," he said.

"Home."

They walked inside. He was by no means a messy housekeeper, was in fact what Howie referred to as

"far too neat and tidy for a heterosexual male," but he'd still spent the better part of last night dusting, vacuuming, and tidying up the place in preparation for Faith's inaugural visit.

She glanced around the room at his plank-and-cinderblock bookshelves, at his saguaro cactus skeleton, at the chaotic jumble of posters, prints, signs, photos, and ads that decorated the walls. "Impressive,"

she said.

"Is is what you expected?"

She glanced around the room once more and, for the first time that morning, smiled. "Yeah," she said.

"It is."

Jim closed the door behind her, locking it. They'd come up here ostensibly because Faith was curious to see where he lived, but the full-size bed that took up the entire center of the room eloquently

symbolized the real reason they'd skipped American Lit today. Faith walked over to the bed, sat down on its edge.

Comfortable.

Jim was suddenly nervous. She'd had her top off in his car, and he'd kissed her breasts. They'd done a little squirming and rubbing. He'd even had his hand inside her panties, a finger inside her.

But this was it. =:

He couldn't help feeling that it sfiold be different.

The mood should be lighter, more upbeat, more happy.

She should at least enjoy what they were about to do.

But whatever had been weighing her down the past week or so was still there, between them, and he decided promise to himself or no promise, that the time had come to find out what was the matter, He sat down next to her on the bed. "What is it?" he asked. "What's wrong?" : "

"Nothing." :,:

"Come on." She seemed unsure of how to respond, and he waited patiently until finally she leaned back on the bed, closed her eyes, and said, "I think it's after me."

He didn't know what "it" was, not exactly, but he knew what she meant, and fear grew within him. His room suddenly seemed dark, and he wished he'd turned on a light or opened the shades. "What happened?" he asked quietly.

"Last week, on Saturday evening, after work, around five--"

"Before we went out?"

"--before we went out, I. I saw something. I was parked in the faculty lot, and I thought I'd take a shortcut through the walkway between Performing Arts and Biological Sciences, and "

"And what?" he prodded.
