The only reason I knew I wasn't in a karaoke booth was that none of the ones I was familiar with offered rigatoni bolognese as a snack.

Beneath a night sky with the twinkling lights of this small arcade to illuminate her, Kizuna barely paid attention to the audience as she casually belted out song after song as though she wanted to get her money's worth out of her room booking.

It was a performance to match the atmosphere. I suppose she was saving her Pavarotti moment for a bigger stage.

Currently, there wasn't more than half a dozen people who stopped at any one time to focus solely her. The diners had to divide their attention between her and their forks.

Mostly, the forks were winning.

It wasn't Kizuna's fault, of course, and I at least had my eyes on her. It might have been my first time eating out at a restaurant for free, but the novelty of free food was less than that of being intrigued by the sight of our resident school idol overpowering her novice guitar ability with sheer confidence.

And also a bit of guile.

As she hit the chorus to Tsumi to Batsu, I realised she was barrelling through chords she didn't know by changing the key she sang in. It was a cute feat. I doubted if anyone listening knew her version was different to the one on the radio.

There was little variation in her guitar playing, but that didn't matter. She didn't misplay anything that wasn't swiftly bulldozed over. Her voice was clear as the siren blazing past on the main road, barely out of sight behind us.

A show that couldn't be faulted.

I finally relaxed, safe in the knowledge that nobody would be asking for their money back on their meals at this rate. I didn't know what the policy was when the performer caused people to throw up complaints.

I surveyed the other diners once more, then dug into a meal blessed by the nuns of Bologna. I could almost cry. Some people wanted riches. Others fame. If I could have anything, it'd be delicious food under an open tarp, shared by a maximum of one other person.

“Oh, that looks good.”

I had to be flexible with my dreams.

Particularly as I wasn't the only one who had it.

Tomomi gave a little peek over my shoulder before pulling up a chair beside me. I scooted a little to the left, plate and all. She deserved the best view. I wasn't Kizuna's mother.

She smiled at me. Then at her daughter. Then at the food.

I wondered if I was meant to offer some.

Tomomi must have come straight from work. Her messy bun looked like it'd just exited a jungle after a month long expedition. She wasn't wearing her work overalls and didn't have any soot peppering her cheeks, but the shadows under her eyes didn't come from someone who'd spent the day relaxing. When my mother came home looking like this, I gave her the right of way to the bathroom.

As though reading my thoughts, Tomomi spied some of the other diners around us.
