CHAPTER TWENTY

Get Out, Now!

Invictus knew the alarm code to the building and the one for the lab. The real trick would be staying under the radar of roaming campus security and late night students out for a stroll.

He kept the bike in quiet mode as he navigated his way past the darkened parking structure toward the Neurology Institute. It was already past midnight and night classes had ceased over two hours ago. He knew there were only sixty or so campus security officers patrolling four hundred-sixteen acres of campus, so unless he attracted undue attention, he should not be noticed.

Dark shadows leapt at him from backlit trees and the breeze shifted those shadows from side to side. He’d often thought there wasn’t any place more perfect for a horror film than a school campus at night.

Franky sat in front of him, clutching the handlebars and enjoying the ride. Being blindfolded seemed to relax him.

Invictus slid the bike into a dark alcove where the poor lighting should obscure it if a security vehicle cruised past. He slid the blindfold off Franky’s head. A gust of wind kicked up. The boy shivered in his threadbare tee shirt as he took in the back entrance to the building. Invictus detached his cape and wrapped it around Franky’s trembling shoulders. Franky’s eyes almost popped out as he clutched the cape around him like he would never let it go.

“C’mon, Robin.”

He led Franky to double glass doors and punched a code into the keypad. With a low click, the doors swung outward. Invictus entered, Franky trailing behind, and strode to a wall to the right of the entrance. Another keypad, punctuated by a large red light, was affixed to the wall at chest height from the floor. Invictus typed in a series of numbers and the red light turned green. There were security cameras within the building, but these only activated if someone entered without disarming the alarm.

Franky watched the double doors close behind him and then followed Invictus along a series of corridors to the lab. Another keypad, another code. They were in. Chin had his own security cameras installed because the lab housed so many drugs, but the professor trusted Vincent and a few others with that code, as well. Making certain to stay out of range of the camera, Invictus punched in another series of numbers. Now they could move about freely.

The lab seemed haunted in the pale moonlight streaming through its only window. Every computer monitor looked like a monster rising up from the floor. Franky pressed against Invictus, his eyes darting everywhere at once.

Part of the nervousness came from the drugs in his system. Paranoia was a standard symptom. It was the actual destruction of brain cells that Invictus sought to map, and hopefully arrest.

“Over here,” he whispered, navigating his way between tables. He didn’t dare turn on the overhead lights because of the window. They moved slowly toward the Connectome scanner in the far corner. This was a super MRI machine modeled after one in Boston.
