The composition key is the internal sense of construction and order that one applies when assembling the parts of a picture. Our authentic sense of design and style is a developmental process that cannot be forced. A rendition of how one naturally configures the world, it is incorporated into your work and is given back in your final image. Do you tend to place your principal subject in the center, to the right, or left of center? Is your visual emphasis placed on the top, bottom, or sides? Some universal compositional keys to begin looking for are the circle, figure eight, spiral, and triangle (see Chapter 2).
