On December 17, 1993, exactly one year to the day after 415 “leaders” of Hamas were deported, those who remained in the camp at Marj al-Zohour were returned to Israel. Some were immediately sent to prison. Others tried to pick up their lives, reconnecting with family, returning to their work. However, that was difficult because all of them were confined by city arrest—they were not permitted to travel outside their community.

Abd al-Fattah al-Awaisi was in a dilemma. If he returned to Hebron, his family would not be able to join him. They remained trapped in a Jordanian refugee camp. Unfortunately, no Middle East country seemed willing to take them. So he turned to friends he’d made in England during his years of study. He was transported to London where his family eventually joined him. I phoned him a couple of times. The reunion with his family seemed to revive him physically and with much needed medical attention, his condition improved. But he lamented that he and his family would never again see their home in Hebron.
