The farewells were heart-rending. Grandmother Huppert, now almost blind, had insisted on rising from her armchair. She stood in silence, immobile. Jurek's mother clung to her husband's hands, as if to prevent him from leaving. And then Tesia threw her arms around Jurek's neck. The women wept. The men, in an attempt to reassure them, could find nothing to say but banalities.

"It's best like this," the lawyer repeated, perhaps in an effort to convince himself primarily. "You mustn't worry about us. As soon as we can, we'll let you know where we are."

As the car drove off, they turned to look back at the women. Only then did Jurek manage to give vent to his feelings. "I feel bad about leaving them all alone like that."

"There was nothing else we could do. Anyway, you'll see, the Nazis won't touch them. They're animals, but they won't dare to hurt the women."
