Brad Chandler dried off his stocky body from a shower and started dressing, catching sight, as he often did, of the Marine Corps “Semper Fidelis” tattoo on his right shoulder.

He was an American who had served his country for over 15 years before taking off on his own. He’d joined the military because running with gangs at home was a sure-fire ticket to prison, and he thought he could score much better while wearing a uniform — the military had all kinds of neat stuff to steal, a ready black market for enterprising young men who knew how to take advantage. He’d been lucky not to end up in the stockade. Chandler used the Corps as a way to enrich himself, using the black market to sell everything from small arms to intelligence products ferreted out by his own spies at the Pentagon. He’d built his network as the foundation of his mercenary career and now hired out to the highest bidder for whatever the task, from overthrowing a country to assassination. His network kept him appraised of potential pitfalls, and so far, he had remained one step ahead of Western intelligence authorities who would certainly like his head mounted on a wall.

In the last few years, he’d found most of his work with the drug cartels of Central America and Mexico, but recent efforts by American law enforcement had sent a lot of his employers to prison or the grave, so he’d had to advertise his services elsewhere.

Luckily, the European drug networks were as hungry for a good shooter as their south of the border counterparts.

The current mission with Ceasario Crisfulli had seemed like a fantasy at first, a typical buried treasure fool’s scenario. But the more Chandler learned, the more he saw up close with Crisfulli’s operatives in the region, the more he realized this was no wild goose chase or con job. The Sanchez money was real, they were going to find it, and he was going to get a piece of it, along with protection promised by Crisfulli should he ever be in need of a place to hide.

Not that he believed that part of the deal, but Chandler was willing to give Crisfulli the benefit of the doubt. Crisfulli knew Chandler’s reputation well enough to also know he’d be killed unmercifully if he pulled a double-cross. But Chandler knew the purpose of the money, and what Crisfulli had in mind for his former colleagues, and it wasn’t simply a case of turning on associates for personal gain. Crisfulli had a reason; he had an agenda; vengeance was at the top of his mind, and Chandler didn’t blame him for being pissed off.

He heard the front door of the villa open, and the cleaning ladies announce themselves. He hurried to finish drying off, then quickly dressed. His black T-shirt fit around his barrel chest snugly, and he looked ripped. Down the hall in his bedroom, he pulled on some boots, then wandered out to the main room.
