If life be long, I will be glad,
That I may long obey;
If short, yet why should I be sad
To welcome endless day?
Do you sense that quiet calm? What is it based on? It is based on the certainty of where he is going. He knows what awaits him, and that is true of every saint who has lived in the world.
So let us face this quietness practically together. What of you? What of your view of that next world, your view of death, your view of the life that lies beyond death? Does it frighten you? Does it seem strange to you? Does thinking about it like this help you or does it depress you? What is your view of it? That is the greatest question you can ever face. We have to face it. We cannot avoid it. What is your feeling about it? Do you have this blessed certainty? Or does the thought of death and leaving this world and going on leave you with a sense of despair and fear and strangeness? That is the question. It all depends upon your view of the next world, and that, of course, depends ultimately upon your view of God and upon your view of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Do you have this blessed certainty?
Or does the thought of death leave you with
a sense of despair and fear and strangeness?
What our Lord said about it to these men was basically this: âI am going to die and leave you, and you too eventually will have to die. But do not be alarmed. Let not your heart be troubled. Why? Where does death lead to? It leads to my Fatherâs house. You know,â he said in effect, âI have never kept anything back from you. I have never withheld anything that is unpleasant. I have always spoken the truth. If it were true that you would never see me again, I would tell you, but it is not like thatâI am telling you the truth about the next life.â
What a specter, what a horrible thing death is to most of us. We regard it as a terrible monster that is going to grip us. Death, we say, is the most terrible thing of all, the thing to avoid. No, says Christ, death is nothing but the door of entry to my Fatherâs house for his followersââIn my Fatherâs house are many mansions.â
We tend to think of ourselves after death, do we not, as in some disembodied state in some great eternity where all is strange and terrible. But it is really to go home, if you are a child of God, if you are a brother or sister of the Lord Jesus Christ. God is not some terrible awful power, away in some distant eternity; he is your Father. He is one who loves you with a love you cannot imagine. Thank God for human love, but, my dear friends, our human love pales into insignificance and nothingness by the side of the love of God toward those who belong to him.
