Remember to always move from inclusive to exclusive. In other words, assume that the child with disabilities will participate in all class activities with the other children. Any modification has the effect of excluding the child to some degree, so add modifications only when necessary and only to the extent necessary.

There are many ways that a classroom teacher can modify and adapt curriculum and instruction for the special needs student. The diagram below illustrates this.

In Chapter 7 we will talk more about behavior and ways to modify, adapt, and teach children with unique behavior needs. In terms of instructional modifications, though, remember to keep in mind the student’s strengths. In our example above, for instance, it would be helpful to give Kathy Lynne a series of pictures that illustrate classroom rules or routines since her reading skills are poor, but her understanding and visual memory for pictures is strong. By using her strengths we can help her to accommodate for her weaknesses and she can be a happy, helpful, productive member of the Bible class.
