Chapter Two

Kimberly came to pick me up the next day in her yellow sedan. Everything about Kimberly was like sunshine. She was bright and bubbly. She told good jokes. Her hair shines in the light. Her eyes sparkled. Her happiness and good nature was infectious and I couldn’t get enough of it.

I slid into the passenger seat and admired her makeup. She never wore too much. A flick of eyeliner and some lip gloss was all it took to make her look regal. She wore studs in her ears that sparkled like little diamonds. She turned to me and smiled with a cocked brow. “Ready for the best week of your life?”

I nodded and laughed. She turned on the radio and drove off toward the beach. The drive only felt long because I was becoming increasingly nervous of the fact that we would be alone in a small house. By the time we pulled up to the little bungalow, my heart was racing too fast.

“Isn’t this place great?” she asked after parking in the driveway. Her eyes were wide and her smile stretched from cheek to cheek. She stepped out of the car and looked it over. I watched her and felt my mouth go dry. I didn’t want to admit to any of the things I was feeling for my best friend. I shouldn’t have those feelings, especially considering I’m straight.

But being near Kimberly made my world come alive. I was never bored. I was never wanting for conversation or excitement. I felt perfect sitting in our little bubble together. I followed her to the front door, leaving my bag in the car temporarily.

She entered the code for the key and unlocked the door. We stepped inside. It was a cozy little place with only one bedroom. Bright, afternoon sunlight stretched across the floor toward us. My heart calmed a little until I realized there was only one bed in the room.

“Don’t worry,” said Kimberly when she caught me looking in. “I’ll take the couch. It’s a pullout. The place said it sleeps two to four people.”

“Oh, no. Don’t do that. I can share a queen size bed with you.” The words came out convincingly enough, but my body shook from desire at the thought.

“You sure you don’t mind?”

“No,” I added. “We’re practically like sisters. No big deal.” I smiled at her, but her eyes searched mine for some hidden truth. I hoped she wouldn’t find it.

“I’ll go get the bags,” she said as she walked through the front door. I explored the rest of the house, walking toward the back windows which faced the beach. Even from inside, the sound of the waves crashing against the sand was audible. I closed my eyes and listened to the calming ocean. I pictured Kimberly walking up behind me and wrapping her arms around my waist. I imagined her lips kissing my neck.

When I heard her speak, my back tensed and my eyes shot open. “That’s everything,” she said. “Let’s go for a swim!”

I bit my lip.
