Chapter 12

Marcus took a long glance at the French Quarter as his chauffeured car passed through. Though Nauru was his nation of birth, New Orleans had been as close to home as anything he had ever known. But, after this week, he would no longer have the simple luxury of a place to call home. If everything worked the way he had planned, and he knew that it certainly would, then he soon would become public enemy number one. The full weight of the United States government would fall upon him. Fortunately for Marcus, the United States government was nowhere nearly as strong or competent as it had once been. Marcus’ lifestyle would change, but he would survive.

The only wildcard was whether or not Sinanju would become involved and Marcus hated wildcards. While his actions had wide-reaching consequences in the past, he had gone out of his way to keep a low profile, taking great care not to do anything that would necessitate the involvement of the Master of Sinanju. Marcus had only survived as long as he had due to extensive planning and knowing what his enemies would most likely do, something unavailable when dealing with a Master of Sinanju.

Among those who knew such things, it had long been reported that the Master of Sinanju and his protégé had been hired some time ago by America. It was only with their help that America had continued limping along the last few decades. What was strange was that the Master of Sinanju, an ancient Korean, had been seen many times in the past with his pupil—a white man. When Marcus first heard the news, he discounted it as inaccurate. A Master of Sinanju never took a pupil outside of his own village, but report after report confirmed that this American was performing feats only possible by Sinanju training.

Marcus took a long sip of Tulsi tea and let the moment sear into his memory. In his chosen life of isolation, he had managed to hold on to only a handful of luxuries, so when he was forced to abandon one, it was a major sacrifice.

His car stopped in front of an old brownstone. The house was built almost two centuries earlier by an eccentric old man who was intent on spending every penny he had amassed over his long life to protect him from the outside world. Most people would have thought that such a place would have become a tourist site, but New Orleans was a city where the ancient and the new existed simultaneously. Marcus preferred the sturdy build of stately older houses to the sleek modern lines of contemporary design. To the casual guest, the house was a two-story architectural oddity with marble stairs and polished wood moldings lining the edge of the ceilings. The only windows in the house were in the front living room and the guest rooms.

Even Charles and Ida, the elderly couple that had maintained the house for the past four decades, did not know the extent of the house’s secrets.
