Chapter 25
Jane liked the hospital social worker. The woman sat on the foot of her bed with her clipboard and took down Janeâs medical history. Sheâd gotten a little pushy about Janeâs family and gave up when Jane wouldnât tell her anything. The name Jane Doe fit her. She certainly wasnât the same Jane sheâd been when sheâd been married to her husband and borne him a child. Ever since heâd died and left her with nothing, she was a different Jane. Yes, she liked Doe. A female deer out in the wild on her own.
She smoothed the sheet and coverlet across her flat chest and pushed her hair back. Time for her favorite soap. Since coming to the hospital, sheâd been able to catch up with what happened since sheâd sold her television. Not much. Soaps were like life. Time seemed realer. No, more real. Thatâs right.
The door opened and a tall doctor with one eye a bit off-kilter came into the room. âHow are you doing today, Mrs. Doe?â
âMiss Doe.â Jane folded her hands on her lap. âNo missus.â He reminded her of her son beforeâwell, before heâd left this world.
âWhatever you say, Miss Doe.â
âI donât think I really have a bad heart.â
âOh you donât?â
âNo. Did I tell you how much like my son you are?â
âWhere is he?â
âOh, heâs no longer with us.â
âHeâs deceased, you mean?â
âFlu. Years ago.â
âWas he your only child?â
âI donât know why the Good Lord never gave us another one.â She twiddled her thumbs. As soon as he left, she could turn on the TV.
âHow are you feeling today?â
âFine. But I donât want to leave.â
He wrote something in her chart. âTwo things. I want to monitor you for a few days since I gave you that heart medication. Secondly, youâre going to have to leave eventually. Social Services will see what they can do for you, though.â
Sheâd miss looking at him. She might be old, but that didnât mean she couldnât appreciate a good-looking manâespecially one who looked like an older version of her son. âYouâre such a good man.â
He put down the chart. âLet me check your heart.â
Jane didnât mind someone with his looks sticking that cold stethoscope inside her hospital nightie. She started to say something, but he put a finger to his lips.
âLean forward so I can listen through your back.â
The doctor smelled like soap, some kind of manâs soap.
âEverything sounds good. Your heart attack was very mild. The fall gave you a slight concussion and, of course, youâre malnourished, but other than thatââ
âSo, youâre really kicking me out, Doc?â
âIt wonât be long, Miss Doe.â He took her hand. âAre you sure thereâs no one we can call to come get you? If you were my mother, Iâd want to know where you were.â
Knock. Knock. Eva Best poked her head inside. âShould I come back another time?â
âCome on in,â Jane said.
âAre you her daughter, maâam?â The doctor hooked the chart on the foot of the bed.
âOh, no. Just . . . a friend.
