Lean

“Exactly how long were you going to keep it from us that you had an enemy trying to take you out?” Reaper sounds calm, but I know better. Prez is pissed.

“I was handling the problem.”

“Hear what you said wrong there, brother?” The way he emphasizes the word brother is an indicator of how irate he is. How irate they all are that I made the situation into a one-man sideshow.

“Are you sure it’s ‘the problem’ you’re trying to handle, Lean?” Trust Crank to bring some levity. Fucker got a glimpse of Cassidy when he delivered my truck back to the shop yesterday. It wasn’t a heartbeat later my phone blew up with questions about whether the hot new girl was the one who’d admitted to tampering with my brake line.

I knew I needed to request for the club to call church to discuss everything going on in my life. Much as I hate putting my personal business on display, the men of Dirty Sinners were there for me when I was a freshly paroled former pencil-pushing geek. During my time locked up, I’d managed to shed the chubby facade that had clung to me when I spent my life in an office building crunching numbers. I hadn’t managed to lose the chip on my shoulder or the drive to find a family to replace the one that had betrayed me.

“I had to know more before I brought her in, so I’d know how to protect her.” To a man, not a single person at this table is violent toward women. That said, threats are threats. If I’d involved the club as soon as I’d discovered Cassidy sabotaging my bike, I can’t guarantee she’d still be breathing. I couldn’t risk it.

“I’m going to ignore your lack of faith in your brothers because I know trust is hard for you. But this is when you explain what’s going on. With quickness. I got a warm bed and a soft woman to get back to.”

The reminder Reaper recently laid claim to an ole lady brings my attention squarely back to the most important information to impart to my brothers.

“Cassidy Sharpe is mine. I’m claiming her, here and now, though I’ll get a cut for her and handle the ink myself once we sort out some shit.” I look around the table at my brothers, these men who claimed me and did right by me when my own blood fucked me over. Pride surges through me, knowing now that I’ve claimed Cassidy for my own, every man here would lay down their life to protect her.

My woman will never again be a victim to anyone. Most especially not my twisted pervert of a sperm donor or his son. As I lay out the facts of how she came to be in Haven, I see the way my brothers’ faces harden in anger and resolve. Not a single objection is made when I lay out my plan to get rid of Michael and Blaine Shaw.
