Mission Statements

The commitment to act is called the mission. Highly effective leaders tend to be goal-oriented, and as such, they frequently have both a personal mission statement and a work-based mission statement. They understand where they are going and why.

You must first have a strong foundation on which you build your goals. A mission statement is designed to help you set goals that will drive change in your personal life and your organization.

To do that, you must first understand what drives you—your principles and values. Principles and values are fundamental truths about ourselves and our ideas; they are the fabric of who we are. Principles are things like fairness, honesty, and integrity. Values are beliefs and opinions that we hold regarding specific issues or ideas, expressing our personal views and opinions. These often help us accomplish objectives based on our current circumstances.

Mission statements can be made for any type of organization. Everyone in the organization should develop organizational mission statements. If there is no involvement in the process, there will be no commitment to the idea.

An organization may have an all-encompassing mission statement; even each team may have their own. However, they should all dovetail with each other.

As an exercise to help you understand this point, let’s complete a mission statement together. Write this down in your notebook.

Describe What Your Company Does: What product or service does your business produce or provide?

Describe How Your Company Does What It Does: List the core values essential to express in your business.

Add Why Your Company Does What It Does: This is the part of your mission statement that describes your spark—the passion behind your business.

Put Your New Mission Statement to Work: Once you’ve crafted your business’s new mission statement, you’ll want to put it to work right away.

How did that work out for you? To compare, here is my mission statement:

To provide superior training, be a great teacher, and inspire leaders to be more than they thought they could be.

There are many great examples of mission statements to be found—if you take time to google mission statements, you’ll find the mission statements of many great leaders. It’s quite fascinating, and I would encourage you to take the time to craft a personal mission statement and your work mission statement.

How does your mission statement do when you put it up against the R-Y-G test?
