Chapter Seventeen

For a short while, the house was quiet.

Juniper had pottered around downstairs in the kitchen, cleaning up after her guests, though silence soon came. Dick’s snores were the only accompaniment as Terra struggled to sleep, using the time instead to speak to APRIL.

What information have you that can confirm Juniper’s story?

No specific information available. Extrapolating the information received by Juniper, one can assume a level of truth. I detected no falsity in her statements, and her record and her husband’s are clean. The pair of them tell true, so one can assume that their stories will corroborate.

What about Garcia? Is there any information that can confirm his part in any of this?

APRIL was silent for a moment, then CCTV footage appeared in Terra’s vision, displaying a montage of clips that showed Garcia arriving and leaving Kibble’s Manor. The first entry was over a year and a half ago, around the time that Juniper had told her that Bill had first seen him. Though the footage didn’t explore inside the manor, relying mostly on public CCTV footage from outside the place, it was clear that Juniper’s story had an air of truth to it.

Can’t you examine the CCTV footage inside the manor? Terra asked, already knowing the answer.

No CCTV footage is available inside the manor.

Because he’s smart, Terra thought. No weak links inside his industry. The moment you enter that building, all is blind, and anything can happen.

She thought about the man dumped into the dumpster and the dead man in the chair.

How do we nail him? Terra asked.

I have no current answer, APRIL replied. Garcia shows decorum and composure in public spaces. Evidence will have to be taken in private and brought out into the public domain. Garcia must slip.

What are the odds of this occurring? Terra asked.

Seven thousand, six hundred eighty-nine to one, APRIL replied.

Wow. I didn’t expect specific odds. Terra considered this. Still… It means there’s still a chance.

She rested her head on her hands and stared up at the ceiling. A door was wide open nearby, leading out onto a small balcony that overlooked the trees. A couple of insects buzzed around on the ceiling, engaged in some primal dance.

The engines hummed.

At first, Terra thought it was more of Dick’s snores. She glanced over, seeing him still fully dressed, asleep on top of his sheets. He looked peaceful, sweet. It was a side of Dick that Terra never thought she’d see.

The hums grew louder.

Approaching vehicles, APRIL announced before Terra could ask. Twelve cars approaching.

Terra sat up. She moved to the balcony and looked right, where the dirt road trailed into the jungle. Dust kicked up in a steady cloud, and several cars rolled toward them.

“Shit.” Terra crossed to Dick and shook his shoulders. “Dick. Wake up. Now.”

“Huh?” Dick grumbled, rubbing his eyes. “What is it?”

“We’ve been outed,” Terra announced. “Get up.”

Dick sat up straight away, bags beneath his eyes. He strained his ears and caught the sound of the cars. “You sure that’s not Bill coming home?”

Terra pointed at the balcony.
