Seven South American Cases, 1956–1979

Although the 1956–1979 experience of medium and small countries in South America ranged across a wide spectrum of paths, it was less diverse than in the larger countries, as only Venezuela did not go through an authoritarian military regime, having escaped from one in 1958. The opposite was true of Chile, which avoided a military takeover until 1973 but would be mired in the hold of one for another decade after the period had ended. Only Paraguay spent the entire period under a dictatorship.
