11.
Derek looked over at Sam who was fussing with the final placements of the daisies in the row of bouquets, and he laughed to himself. With the shop down for at least two weeks for repairs, the artists were feeling the strain of boredom. Sam enjoyed being home for the first couple of days, but with Maisy in school, he realized how quickly his place felt lonely.
Niko’s was always an option, but the restaurant kitchen wasn’t exactly the most ideal spot for a wheelchair user to get his feet wet when it came to cooking, so he was relegated to flower duty. Which, as Derek observed, he didn’t seem to mind so much.
“You know, if you ever wanted to give up your career in tattoos…” Derek said with a grin.
Sam flashed him a middle finger without turning around, though Derek could see the curve of his cheek lifted in a grin. “Do you think they’ll be happy with it?”
Derek set the box of freshly cut lilies down and peered over Sam’s shoulder. “Instagram worthy for sure. I mean, I don’t really have the best eye, but…”
“You’re an artist,” Sam reminded him, elbowing his side gently. “I trust you better than most of the guys.”
Derek didn’t have the energy to argue with him on the definition of artist—especially when artist was in the damn name of their profession, and really, he knew Sam was just trying to boost his ego a little. Derek’s true passion was in painting, but he couldn’t pay the bills that way. Not yet, and maybe not ever, but he’d never fully give it up.
Though, he realized as he went back to arranging the center pieces, he would have to take a step back for a while. Basil was set to take over the shop fulltime, and with Derek’s tattooing schedule, something would have to give once they had a baby. If they had the baby, though he’d stopped himself from qualifying that statement over the last few days.
“Dude, why are you making the dead dog face?” Sam demanded.
Derek breathed out and shook his head. “Just thinking about everything that’s going to change once the baby thing happens.”
Sam spun around, pushing a little closer to his friend. “How so?”
“Well,” Derek said slowly, fussing with some of the ferns, “our schedules for one. I remember how hard it was for you to balance Maisy and taking appointments. It took forever before you could start running your classes again.”
“That had a lot to do with the fact that it was a pain in the ass to get interest in them,” Sam reminded him, though they both knew it wasn’t just that. Sam had been a mess trying to figure out parenting when he first brought Maisy home, and it had taken several months before things settled into a routine. “You’re not going to have to cut back on clients.”
“I’m not worried about that,” Derek said softly. He ran his thumb over one of the soft chrysanthemum petals and caught a whiff of the floral scent.
