SAM

The gun shop was unguarded. He scanned the street running in front of the business in both directions. Not a single vehicle was in view, nor did he hear any approaching cars from up the road. Now was his chance to move in.

Sam hustled across the street and crossed into the parking lot to the barred front glass door. He hid in the corner of the alcove and waited a beat, then turned and peered through the door to the interior of the store.

Sunlight illuminated the front portion of the store. He swept the shelves and racks from left to right for any movement. From what he could tell, there was no one inside. The shop was his for the taking.

He tested the door to see if it was open before trying to pick the lock. The likelihood of such luck was low in Sam’s eyes, but stranger things happened when one least expected it.

A simple tug on the handle revealed it was unlocked, for some reason. It gave him pause. He was skeptical of why it wasn’t secured. Someone had to have broken in at some point.

As he pulled the door open a bit further, a bell dinged from above. He froze. No response came because of the jingle. Sam noticed the metal jamb had scratches near the lock. The surface was scored by some object used to gain access.

No voices loomed from the interior of the building. He listened and stood on the tips of his toes while surveying the rows of shelving. To Sam, it confirmed he was alone.

He ducked inside the doorway and shut the door, then locked it behind him. After clearing the entrance, he took stock of what the store had to offer and walked the aisles. Sections of the shelves that stored ammo had been cleared off. Not all of it was taken, but a large dent had reduced the stock available for him to pilfer.

Still, Sam noticed enough rounds left behind for him to make it worthwhile. Plus, there was a variety of guns stored on the walls and within the glass cases. He got to work.

After tracking down a black duffle bag from one of the shelves, Sam picked out a mix of rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Each of the weapons was stored in the bag, which he left on top of the glass counters. He worked quickly, moving from each rack on the walls to the guns kept in the cases. As much as he wanted to take all the guns, he had to be selective and not overdo it.

Once he got his fill, Sam moved on to getting ammo for the weapons and what arsenal the Petersons had. There weren’t many 9mm rounds left, so he took what was there. Plenty of .45 ACP rounds were stocked as well as .223/5.56. There were a scant few 12-gauge shells left, and a fair amount of 10-gauge had been left behind, too.

The duffle bag filled in a blink. It was cumbersome to carry with it loaded down.
