Chapter Thirty-Four

Moss parked his Escalade on Main Street behind a Ford F-250 quad-cab dually. It had an extended bed with a topper attached. On the roof of the cab was a metal rack. The truck was covered in an advertising wrap that said Dreamcatcher Guide Services. Kaplan checked the time, it was almost 1:00 a.m. and everyone in the car looked tired.

"KC is here," Cavalier announced.

"Who's KC?" Kaplan asked.

"My other deputy."

"I like KC," Lucy said. "He is always nice to me."

Kaplan opened his door and was surprised when Lucy slid out on his side instead of using her door. She stayed close to him, holding his hand until the four of them got inside the town marshal's office. A large man in a tan uniform shirt was sitting at the desk where Doug sat yesterday morning.

Cavalier introduced KC to Moss and him. KC was a big man, Native American Indian, just like Cavalier had said. Northern Cheyenne. He had thick jet-black hair that fell to the middle of his back. When KC stood, he was tall like Moss, maybe an inch taller. He was rock-hard, with wide shoulders, enormous arms and a neck the size of a tree stump. Definitely someone you'd want on your side of the playing field. KC's voice was low but strong and had the sound of a man with a thick tongue.

"I hear you both had a run in with the Pearsons," KC said to Lucy and Cavalier.

"Just Stevie for me. He is freaking crazy." Lucy sat down in a chair next to where Kaplan was standing. "Evan protected me."

"That is because Evan likes you," KC stated emphatically. "Just like Doug did."

The mention of Doug's name brought the room to silence.

Moss stretched his arms and yawned. It spread. Lucy yawned. Cavalier tried to suppress it, but it was easy to see.

Kaplan interrupted the silence. "We should all get some shuteye."

"First, we need to plan our strategy," Cavalier said with an insistent tone.

"Marshal, it's late. We've all had a trying day." Kaplan glanced at Lucy. "Some of us more than others. No way the Pearsons will come back into town tonight and I'm pretty sure they won't try to leave. They have hunkered down. They'll be up all night thinking you're coming to get them. Tomorrow, when we're fresh, they won't be. We'll have the advantage."

"What about the Branson murders?" KC asked. "And the Stillwater farm on the Rez?"

Kaplan looked at Cavalier. "Something for you to think about overnight, Marshal." He motioned for Lucy to get up and turned his head to look at Moss. "How about a ride to the motel?"

"Wait," Cavalier said. "Be back here at 7:00."

Moss groaned.

"How about a 7:30 strategy breakfast at the diner?" Kaplan replied. Everyone seemed to like that idea.

"Okay." Cavalier relented. "7:30 at the Last Chance Diner. You too, KC."
