ESTHER

This is the longest I’ve ever spent with someone who has seen me naked. Other than my sisters, I guess. Not that I care who sees me naked because I look really fucking great naked. It’s just…I don’t do relationships. I don’t do attachments. I spent all my affection dollars on my sisters, and I don’t have a savings account where that’s concerned.

So it pisses me off that I feel myself fretting about what Koa will do while I’m at the bar Tuesday. What do I care what he does? I haven’t cared about what he’s done for the past five years. I’ve barely given any thought to him at all, except for the occasional time I spot a guy who looks like he might be a Pacific Islander.

Anyway, I have way too much to do prepping my sister to manage the bar in my reluctant absence. I start to grow irritated that Koa and I can’t handle this interview over video conference or something. It seems so restrictive that we have to haul ourselves to Philadelphia for this meeting when I live in a perfectly large city with perfectly functional government offices downtown.

“What crawled up your ass?” Eva startles me into dropping a metal pitcher of water, which she catches before it topples onto the floor from the back-bar counter. “I’d have thought those sex cookies would have put you in a better mood, sis. You’re welcome, by the way, for me staying out late and giving you space for hanky panky.”

“I don’t need space,” I mutter, scooping ice into the pitcher and setting it on a towel at the end of the bar. I’ve started putting out self-serve water and cups. People seem to appreciate pacing themselves, and I actually think business picked up a bit. Could just be the warmer weather. Sam would tell me to use her data tracking software, so I’d know for sure, but I haven’t had time to set anything up yet.

“Go on and unlock the door…” I drift off in my instructions for Eva when I see that she’s already smirking from the doorway. She propped open the front door, letting in a cool breeze and the afternoon sun. She also set out a sandwich board I’ve never seen before, advertising our seasonal cocktails. “Where’d that come from?”

“We spent last night crafting while you ate sex cookies.” Eva dusts off her hands and smiles at the sign. “I think it looks nice.”

“Knock it off with the cookies. I only ate one.”

Eva arches a brow at me and frowns. “That was stupid. I’d eat an entire box of those sex cookies, if you know what I mean.”

“Can you not talk about Koa that way?” I check the bottles on the speed rail to make sure our most common supplies are set up and ready to go. The tech startup crowd usually wanders in before five for an afternoon tipple before I think they go back to work to code things all drunk.

Eva laces a black apron around her hips and stuffs some ones from the register in the pocket.
