Chapter 31: Breaking the Morning
When the sun crested the horizon, Tom was already awake. He had eaten, strapped on his prosthetic, and he had sent a text to Iris to check on her and her father.
She hadn't replied, and Tom hoped that was because she had fallen asleep and not because her father had taken a turn for the worse.
He had stayed up until almost midnight, using the grinder in the basement to put a fine edge on the machete. And while he had done so, Bontoc had spoken to him.
Lectured for over an hour on how best to remove a head, with one blow. Then, with exquisite attention to detail, he had corrected Tom's swing.
I wish I had more time, he thought, sliding the sheathed machete into his backpack and then placing some of his books in with it. He added the lunch he had made, and several bottles of water. There was a slight chance a Fox Cat Hollow officer might search his bag, but Tom wanted to make sure there was something in there other than a machete with an edge sharp enough to cut silk cleanly.
âAre you ready, Tom Daniels?â Bontoc asked from behind him, and Tom jerked around in shock, his heart thundering.
âDamn,â Tom said, shaking his head and swallowing nervously, âyou've got to make some noise or something, Bontoc. You scared the hell out of me.â
âMy apologies,â Bontoc said. âThat was not my intention.â
âNo, I know,â Tom replied. âBut it's not the way I want to start the morning.â
âThe morning will start anyway it chooses,â Bontoc said with a chuckle. âNothing you nor I can do will change that. Now, if I may ask again, are you ready?â
Tom cinched the top of the backpack closed, slung it over his shoulder and nodded.
âAbout as ready as I'm going to be,â Tom answered. He twisted the aluminum ring on his finger with his thumb.
âExcellent,â Bontoc said. âI will walk beside you.â
âHow about you just sort of stay hidden until we get to the cemetery,â Tom interrupted.
Bontoc hesitated, then grinned and chuckled. âAh yes. I am dead. More often than not, I forget that, Tom. Thank you for the reminder. I will stay hidden until we arrive at the cemetery. Then we shall flush out the ghoul.â
âSounds like a plan to me,â Tom said. A heartbeat later, the dead man was gone, leaving Tom alone in the kitchen.
He left the house by way of the back door, and he took some of the thin footpaths that ran between the neighborhoods toward downtown Fox Cat Hollow. Only a few cars passed by him, and none of them were cruisers. He made it all the way to the graveyard with nothing more serious than several irate dogs who had charged at him from behind their fences.
Tom had a thin sheen of sweat on him when he stepped into the graveyard, and Bontoc appeared a moment later.
âTake a few moments,â Bontoc said, the humor was gone from his voice and replaced by a calm and deadly seriousness.
