“You feeling warmer now?” Isla’s sitting on the motorcycle, warming up from the purring engine.

“Yes, better now. Thanks, Klort… I’m sorry. You must’ve been actually worried back there.” The usual Isla is back—the Lady Isla.

“It was mayday distress my brain sent out. So yeah, I was spiralling.” With my hands in the pocket of my coat, I sit down and cuddle Isla from behind, wrapping her into my coat. “But I have to admit, that was a genius plan.”

“It was,” she claims the compliment, “But it was… very immature.”

“Well, that wouldn’t be the first time.” I shrug.

“Right. Because I’m—ah-choo!” A tiny sneeze cuts her off. Isla’s nose scrunches a little, rubbing her finger to it while I start a whole debate in my head, whether or not that was the most preciously cute thing Isla’s done.

After that interruption, we stare at the sky, the ocean wind moves the clouds along the currents. The moon glows brighter now and the golden sand looks nearly enchanted. It feels like the moment where the two characters start talking about—

“So, is this the part where we have a heart-to-heart moment?” She reads my mind.

“Uhhh,” I’m baffled for a second, “I mean, according to every montage, yes.” I lay my head on her shoulder.

“… Do I just start asking questions?”

“Mmh, I don’t know, but just go with what you feel like saying.”

“Okay… I have been wondering the whole day about this,” she takes a breath, “where is your mother, Klort?”

“Wow. So we are starting off strong!” I joke.

“Oh, no! You don’t have to—” she panics.

“I’m just kidding, your Lady.” I peck the nape of her neck, she tastes like the sea. “My mom doesn’t live with us. It just so happens her job requires her to be across the ocean.”

“I see. And the biology thing?”

“I used to get top grades for bio, it was a curse for me though. It made my family believe that I wanted to be a med student, so I ended up hating it.”

“Because you love animation.” Her voice sounds so soothing with the low tides of the ocean. “… I want to pursue social justice. Or humanitarian studies. My mother sees it as foolish because there’s really no point for the nobles to make a fuss when we already have everything.”

“Then what makes you want to do it?”

“Because I know I have power and influence over things. I’m a Lady, Klort. There is so much I can do to help others, and I want to be better than my parents.” Her voice is strong and proud, like a natural-born leader.

“I’m not surprised by this confession,” I shrug, “It fits you like a glove.” I think she should just do what she wants.

“You really think so?” Her voice is kind and sweet.

“Yes, I do.” I smile. “Lady Isla Blarnett of Andersville, assisting thousands of food drive donations over the holiday season. Yeah, definitely something I’d see as the headline.”

“You are so weird.” She taps my nose, I huff out a short breath at that.
