Eventually, Putana arrived in Gokul. The contagious excitement of the villagers, who were endlessly gushing over the newborn of a woman named Yashoda, signified that she had come to the right place. She retreated into the shadows and waited for the following morning to make her move.

Come dawn, Putana snared the most poisonous snake she could find and smeared its venom all over her nipples. She then returned to Gokul and joined the visitors filing into Yashoda's residence. Putana introduced herself to Yashoda and requested permission to nurse her son. Struck by Putana's false beauty, Yashoda assumed that the stranger was a goddess descended from the heavens to sanctify her son, and gladly handed him over to her.
