The second he becomes physical, counter him and kick his ass. You are perfectly within your right in defending yourself.

If he gets "mad" at you, don't let yourself become intimidated. He is the one in the wrong. He was getting too close to you. He was the one making you feel uncomfortable. You had every right to let him know how you felt. Don't yell back at him, just speak at a loud volume. “Back away from me now.” “You are making me feel uncomfortable.” “I don’t know who you are.”

If he finally moves away this time, great, but if he still doesn’t catch on, you can speak up again, tell a bystander to get help, phone the police, or perform a pre-emptive strike. When a lot of bystanders are around, you shouldn’t go for the strike first.
