Super freakin' scary.

The more the day goes on and the more good things keep happening to me, the tighter the choker around my neck becomes. No one else seems to notice. I feel it, though. Feel it tightening, clenching around my throat more and more, little by little. When I go to check myself in the mirror after my last class before I need to get to the dance studio, the choker is literally embedded in my throat. On the bottom and topmost edges of the thin leather, my skin presses out and up, a sheer line imprinted against my skin.

I open my mouth, taking in a quick gasp of breath. It's not hard, not yet, but even now it's like the more I talk the harder it is to keep going. I can only manage quick, short sentences, easy answers or questions, before it becomes too much and I need to pause for a deep breath.

"Are you alright?" Angel asks when we meet up on the front lawn outside the university. She looks worried, brow knit, trying to figure out what exactly is off about me.

"I'm fine," I say, taking a deep breath in. "Excited! Dancing. Today is the day Master Anton--" I take another deep breath, then exhale. "He picks who is playing Ariel today. The Little Mermaid. We're performing it in two weeks."

"Arisa, seriously, are you alright?" Angel asks. "Why are you talking like that?"

"I'm fine, Angel," I say, sucking in air quietly. "Please stop worrying. I got this."

"I'm coming with you," she says, staring at me.

"Fine. Sure."

Her mom offered to give us a ride to class today. I think my parents put her up to it, otherwise I would've just rode my bike like usual. Yes, I get that maybe it seems weird to ride a bike to college, especially considering I have a perfectly good Tesla. I just... I hate feeling like I'm showing off. I don't want to. I just--

Lina picks us up, too. Angel tells her mom that she's going to hang out at the dance studio with me and do her homework there.

"Muy bueno, mi amor," Lina says, smiling. "Maybe try dancing, too? I know you like it."

"Mama, you have to pay," Angel says. "It's too much."

"Tell me," Lina says. "Tell me how much. It's not too much. It's fine. Trust your mother."
