3 Slab Serif

Slab serif is a serif typeface that utilizes blocky, thick serifs, making a bold statement particularly suited for headlines. Typewriter fonts like Courier fall into this group, as do well-known advertising fonts including Rockwell and Playbill (discussed in chapter 6), and in-text fonts with a bold appeal like Clarendon and Egyptienne. There are a wide variety of slab serif fonts, but their common denominators are chunky, thick serifs and striking visual appeal.

The slab serif has its origins in advertising. A typeface with strong, bold lines was needed for headlines, ad copy, and posters. Slab serifs were perfect because of their clear impact. A craze for all things Egyptian arose in western Europe during the nineteenth century, and although in actuality the slab serif typeface had nothing in common with ancient Egyptian letter forms, it came to be associated with Egypt in the public eye due to heavy advertising and marketing linking the two. In fact, many of the early slab serif fonts were named after cities in Egypt.

Today, slab serifs are most widely associated with lettering used in American sportswear and college garments. This connection is used to great effect in the Child’s Initialed Backpack (facing page) and the Letterman Sweater (page 57). The Slab Serif Charts in this book (pages 116–17) include uppercase letters only, as is traditional with this typeface. Use slab serif fonts in your own knitting when you want to make a bold statement with unequivocal impact.
