Chapter 16

Wednesday October 7th

“How can we be sure your landline isn’t bugged?” April asks when I explain why I’m calling her from the landline at the store this morning.

“Only customers and telemarketers call the landline. Would it even occur to someone to hack a landline nowadays?”

“Well, if it is bugged, we can always use smoke signals. Or two tin cans and a long piece of string.”

“How about two tin cans and a piece of yarn?” I ask. “Would that work? Between the store inventory and my personal stash, I might have several thousand kilometres of the stuff.”

I tell April about my long, hectic day yesterday. “I’d send you a pic of the beautiful floral arrangement Phillip made, but I’m avoiding my phone until I know for sure it’s not spying on me.”

“I will never buy another thing from Jamila Jagger again!” April declares angrily.

“I don’t think I will, either,” I concur. “The worst part is, now the police have the laptop, and it’s stuck in evidence. By the time I get it back, laptops will probably be a thing of the past.”

“I’m glad she wasn’t there when you went to Bits’n’Bytes last night,” April says. “If you confronted her and she’s the killer, she might have snapped and killed you too.”

“I know,” I admit. “I realize that now. I felt angry and violated at the time. I didn’t think it through. I won’t go back unless someone is with me. That way if she snaps and goes homicidal, whoever is with me can escape and make sure she’s held accountable for killing me.”

“That’s funny, not funny, Megapop. Death jokes are only funny when they’re about bad people or people we don’t love.”

“Sorry, not sorry,” I say.

“Are you and Karen friends?” April asks after I tell her about Karen’s surprise visit and the whisper-yelling argument Eric and I had in the back room.

“No,” I state firmly. “She lied to my face. I can’t be friends with someone who lies to me. And it was a risky lie. She knows Harmony Lake is a small town, and everyone knows everyone else. She knows there’s a high likelihood someone I know has seen her at Emory’s office. Also, she has a habit of steering our conversations toward Eric, and I don’t want to talk about him with her. Or about her with him.”

“Do we hate her now?” April asks.

“No.” I reply with a sigh. “We don’t hate her, but we don’t trust her.”

“Got it.”

“Is everything OK with you and Eric after the whisper-yelling argument?”

“Totally,” I assure her. “We talked after dinner while I changed my passwords. Karen’s sudden appearance in Harmony Lake rattled him. The Karen he knows is spiteful, and he’s afraid she’ll try to sabotage our relationship. We’re on the same page now. He promises to trust my judgement about dealing with his ex-wife, and I promise not to befriend her and invite her to Thanksgiving dinner.”

I came to the store early to phone April. To give us some privacy during our call, Eric stayed home.
