TWENTY-ONE
Cannon yanked Juliaâs laptop cord out of the wall. Unplugging technology did nothing to unplug his brain from the conversation heâd just had with Rosalie. Their feelings for each other could get them killed. How screwed up was that?
Julia threw a magazine at him.
He caught it midair and crumpled the pages in his fists. âThe whole idea of you being in a hospital bed is to rest, not work. Stop being a brat.â
âThen plug my computer in, or I swear Iâll grab Eastonâs rifle and shoot you in the kneecap.â
Easton snickered from where he relaxed in a recliner by the window. âHelp yourself, darlinâ. Itâs right behind me.â
âThank you.â She looked at Cannon. âNow, tell me more about this boy whoâs been kidnapped.â
âThatâs not for you to worry about. Let me see the leg.â He checked her wound and covered her back up with the sheet. âIt looks good.â
âI know. When can I go home?â
âSoon.â By that, he meant once Malgor was caught. If Rosalieâs theory about him hurting the people they cared about was true, the safest place for Julia was in his hospital.
He motioned for Easton to join him in the hall and gave a quick rundown of how he could help find Aidan.
âGreat. Weâll start working on it right away. Julia needs something to do.â
âShe needs to rest.â
âYou know, you can leave her alone once in a while. Maybe convince Rosalie to get away with you and take a vacation.â He waggled his eyebrows. âYou can use Daddyâs time-share in Hawaii.â
âNo, I canât. Remember what happened the last time I took a vacation?â
âThat wasnât your fault.â
âYes, it was.â A few months after his father had died, heâd taken off for the weekend with his friends.
âTrust me,â his mother had said when heâd repeatedly asked if she could handle Julia and the aftermath of her Friday chemo session. It had only been a few months since his fatherâs death and the breakdown that had left his mother emotionally paralyzed. How much progress could she have made since then?
Not enough, because sheâd frozen when Julia had stopped breathing.
He clenched his fists against the memories. âMy sister didnât just almost die while I was having sex in a crappy motel room with some chick I barely knew. She did die.â
Easton shook his shoulder. âBut she didnât stay dead.â
âOnly because luck brought Annie and her casserole over. If she hadnât come by at the right timeâ¦â He raised a fist to the wall.
Easton stopped his punch. âI know you feel guilty about leaving Julia that night, and I swear on my rifle that nobody blames you for what happened except your stupid self, but youâve got to stop treating Julia like sheâs going to die tomorrow. She needs to live, not just breathe.â
Cannon blinked at the truth in Eastonâs words. Guilt settled in his gut, and not the kind he usually felt.
