Chapter 27: Fear and Self-Loathing

Heather sat in the darkness of the bathroom, head bent over the toilet and a bottle of mouthwash in her hands.

With mechanical motions, she removed the cap, brought the mouth of the bottle up to her lips, and took a small sip. She rinsed with it, then spit into the toilet.

Richard’s ring was an oppressive weight on her hand, and Heather wished she had the ability to remove it.

You know how you can take it off, she reprimanded herself.

But she couldn’t do it. Not sober. And if she was drunk, she knew she would weep over the whole situation. The idea of cutting her finger off to remove the ring caused her stomach to tremble, and Heather whimpered, afraid she might throw up again.

I just want to die, she thought, tears streaming from the corners of her eyes. That’s all. That’s it. Nothing else matters.

Flashes of memories had been rising up within her. Horrific scenes of mutilation and death. And she had done them. Or at least her body had, and her eyes had acted as recorders.

From beyond the closed bathroom door came the sound of humming.

Richard was moving around the apartment, happy and pleased with the torture he had visited not only upon the girl he had killed but on Heather as well.

Please, Heather prayed, please let me die.

“Heather,” Richard said from the other side of the door, “I think it’s time you come out of there. There’s work to be done.”

“No,” she whispered.

“Oh, Heather,” Richard said, suddenly in the room. “That wasn’t a request. It was a command.”

Heather howled as she tried to get away from the dead man, but Richard’s cold, pain-inflicting hands wrapped around her wrists and began to squeeze.

“Now,” Richard said in a conversational tone, “get out there and drink.”

Weeping, Heather did so.
