7/5 BORN TO LEAD 12

A few weeks before the Tree Port Community Center event, Tee excitedly called me and screamed to the heavens, “Hassan! I have great news that I must share in person.” Hastily, I ended the call and began to prepare for one of our epic celebrations that had become somewhat routine over the years. Whenever Tee or I accomplished a remarkable career feat, we celebrated by enjoying Uncle Nearest Whiskey on the rocks first, a glass of Chianti second and Godiva chocolate as that was Tee’s favorite. While shuffling around the house, I grabbed my favorite whiskey and pristine crystal glasses for our drinks. I collected a few pieces of chocolate as my excitement for what I presumed to be a promotion for Tee reached its peak. Any promotion that Tee earned was well deserved. She had spent countless hours doing the dirty work required to better the community, while many others only showed up for photo ops that promoted their organizations. She truly loved and understood the youth in Tree Port and had found a way to forge genuine bonds with the youngsters that were even foreign to Prince and me. She had this smooth and uncanny penchant for disarming the most cynical people in society. She could sell a cracked seashell to an already protected clam or a hump to a camel that had no room for an additional hump. She was simply one of the most amazing women in the world.

As my preparation for her arrival neared its end, I heard a knock. It was a gentler knock from Tee than I was accustomed to. One hundred percent of the time, she delivered that annoying hard police knock to troll my calm sensibilities. Every time she arrived, she would knock hard, and before opening the door, I would yell, “who that? Twelve?” She would reply, “boy, you know this ain’t no cop, open the door.”

As I opened the door while wondering why she didn’t knock like Twelve for the first time, I noticed it. Tee had knocked gingerly on the door as a means to protect the flawless diamond that meant forever with someone had been determined. My heart and mind started racing immediately. Which hand is the ring finger on…? Is it the right, or is it the left? I anxiously pondered.

As my reflections of days gone by came to a close, professionally dressed Tasha made her way to the podium. While Tee was well versed on the topics that Tino and I covered, her message focused on a different subject. Her topic was often ignored when discussing crime. She zeroed in on how to best protect black women and what role black men in the community should play to protect our women. With such ease, she spliced and explained the reported homicides, rapes and domestic violence numbers. Tee initiated her speech by stating, “Tree Port, good evening. Today I would like to delve into a topic that’s near and dear to my heart.
