Christmas Invitation

ALEX WAS SITTING UP in bed the next morning when Sylvester arrived. “You are looking so much better, Old thing! But how do you feel?”

“Good, considering, thanks for asking. Now fill me in with the short version before the kind doctor returns from breakfast.” Alex said, grabbing his toast before Sylvester could snatch it.

“Not to worry, I entrust him into Yvette’s care at the moment they are playing Chess. Sylvester said, settling for a strawberry. Well, let’s begin. Dr. Jane told Jonathan about Rupert’s boyfriend in India, that was his reason for returning there after his mother died. It was unknown if the reunion took place. Adama was arrested in India on trumped-up charges being accused of spying for Germany. He easily escaped from a hospital where he was being treated for a virus. Dr. Rupert Higgins worked at that same hospital before he boarded the La Vie.”

“Do you trust our doctor?” Alex’s asked, knowing his friend’s evaluations were usually on the mark.

“No, homosexuality, drugs, and love—it makes him vulnerable. Sir Jonathan also uncovered a link between your boy, Viktor Popov, and Dr. Rupert Higgins’s boyfriend, Adama Patibandla. It’s one of my favorite subjects, diamonds!”

“Diamonds,” Alex asked before finishing his coffee?

“Isn’t it exciting, Patibandla’s family is the rogue cartel in India, and your dear friend, Victor’s family, was responsible for the new diamond discovery last year in Siberia. I say 1950 wasn’t a good year for the De Beers gang. These two young gentlemen, it seems, are trying to crush the cartel. The Russians, with the help of the India cartel, inundated the market, driving prices down. De Beers’ efforts to buy them off have so far failed,” Sylvester quickly stole another strawberry from Alex’s breakfast tray while he was pouring more coffee.

“I was the division while the Russian got away, correct?”

“Your perception never ceases to amaze me, Dear Alex. My guess would be this rouge agent inside your CIA, along with the Potts, and I’m speaking in Plural, used you to locate Popov, so they could capture both Popov and Adama. However, their plans were aborted when you walked into an ambush set up by the Patibandla’s family to protect Popov. Sir Jonathan has information that they were meeting in Kathmandu where their son, Adama, was hiding there after escaping his false arrest in India arranged by the De Beers cartel.”

“What? You are saying there are two Potts?”

“Yes, logistically, it makes sense; you know how fussy I can be when planning a caper? With Sir Jonathan’s information about Potts along with yours, I was curious, you see. The timeline wasn’t correct, so I put together my own. Sylvester held up a sheet with a time chart drawing. I say it is a bit crude. I did it hastily, but look here; how did Mr.Potty manage to be in San Francisco on this date and in Hawaii, unless he is Superman? I say Mario would love that; he’s been reading Superman comics since 1938.”

When it came to logistics, Alex knew Sylvester was a master, as he looked more carefully at the timeline he created.
