CHAPTER 14

SILAS

I’d prove it to Amity.

I’d said those words and I meant them. I’d prove to her that nothing about my life was going to stand in the way of having her. She was more important than all of that put together. Even if the truth about her brother’s accident would’ve likely ruined it all. There was no reason to think she’d ever find out.

Her father had promised me when it had happened that he wouldn’t tell her. I’d thought he would’ve hated me and put the blame on me, but he hadn’t. And he’d never told her that the accident had been my fault. If she ever found out, it would mean I’d never have her in my life again.

It had broken my fucking heart watching her grieve her brother knowing that if not for me, he would’ve still been alive. That was part of the reason I pushed myself so hard in the game.

I was playing for both of us.

It didn’t matter if it’d been seven years.

Amity looked up at me with those big, gray eyes. I’d never seen eyes quite the color of hers and couldn’t remember if her mom had that color. Her dad sure as hell didn’t. He had brown eyes that could shoot the worst death stares if you were a member of his team not doing what he should have been doing.

Hers were fucking beautiful.

“I’m going to go to bed,” she said quietly. “Do you…?” She looked away and wet her lips as if what she was going to ask were hard for her. “Do you want to sleep in the bedroom with me or on the couch?”

How this woman didn’t already know the answer to that question, I had no idea. The only thing that would keep me from her bed was her.

“With you,” I told her, then I leaned in to kiss her again. Fuck. I really wished she hadn’t had an accident tonight. For many reasons, but wanting her more than I’d ever wanted anyone was at the top of the list. Right after her not being hurt. I moved away from her and grabbed her bowl. “You go ahead. I’ll clean this up.” Though she hadn’t eaten much of her snack. If she got hungry later, I’d get her one. “I’ll just be a minute.”

She nodded then headed toward what I assumed was the bedroom. I hadn’t been here before, but it was the only place that led to another room.

After grabbing her bowl, I stacked it with mine and went to the sink intending to empty them and rinse the bowls. But when she pulled her shirt over her head before she got into the bedroom, I knew that I wasn’t going to be rinsing anything and wondered if this was part of her convincing me, as she’d said earlier she intended to do.

Instead, I left the bowls, locked the door, and turned off all the lights on my way to her bedroom. I’d have to go by home in the morning to change and shower and brush my teeth.
