Chapter Twenty Six

We sat in silence briefly and I let my shoulders relax a little, flicking out the blade of the pocket knife I’d swiped from the tall Russian’s trouser pocket. Carefully, I angled it towards the ties and gently tilted my wrists until I could feel the bite of the blade against the plastic.

“Any idea where we are?” I asked Cian.

He shook his head.

“So what, are we just going to wait around for them to come back?” I said, looking around the room for escape points, “I don’t like the sound of this message.”

Cian seemed to be bracing himself, focusing on something, maybe on the threat that loomed over him.

“I have no idea what they have in mind,” he answered eventually, “but knowing the Russians, it usually involves sending you home missing a piece.”

“Even better reason to get out of here then,” I said, getting to my feet and moving to the door.

I carefully twisted the handle left and right and the door sprang open. Cian sat staring at me, disbelief pasted across his face.

“How the fuck have you got out of those?” he hissed.

I smiled, dangling the knife in front of me by the handle.

“I didn’t just go to youth court for punching someone,” I said shrugging, “I was a pretty good pick-pocket too.”

“And why have you not cut these ties before now?” he spat, beckoning to his hands with his head.

I sidled over to him.

“Didn’t think I was ‘relevant’ enough for you. So I thought I’d wait to see how you were going to get us out of here. Seeing as it looks like your plan involves losing a digit or a limb or something equally horrible, I figured we’d better turn to plan B: escape.”

Cian rolled his eyes and I stepped around behind him, pushing the blade between his wrists and pulling until the plastic popped falling into two pieces. He stood up, rubbing at the skin where the ties had cut into his flesh. Reaching down, I undid the straps of my heeled sandals, kicking them off my feet.

“What are you doing now?” he hissed at me.

I rolled my eyes at him, “I can hardly make the great escape in these things, can I?”

He shook his head and grasped my hand, pulling me behind him as we crept forward towards the door. Turning the handle carefully, easing it open just a crack, Cian peered out into the dimly lit corridor beyond.

We skulked out quietly, both of us listening intently for the subtle sounds of anyone approaching. My heart beat harder and faster in my chest and I pushed my hand over the top of it in case it was as loud as it felt in my ears. Silently, we moved forward, my feet cold as my bare skin dragged across the floor tiles, occasionally catching on the roughness where some parts had worn away from years of use.

Eventually, after the corridor bent round to the left, and we crept precariously past closed doors, fearing someone would come rushing out at us, we reached the end where a single metal door barred the way.
