Quinn was completely lost when he opened his eyes. The room around him was almost fully dark, but he could make out the outlines of square things, and maybe a gate of some kind.

What he could see quite well was Kir. He was holding onto Quinn as if he were afraid Quinn might disappear if he didn’t, and it was enough to remind Quinn of what had happened the night before—or day before, he didn’t even know anymore. Their legs were tangled, since Quinn was back in his human form, and he was holding onto Kir just as tightly as Kir was holding onto him.

Quinn’s first instinct was to burrow even closer to Kir, but the second one was to push away. He hesitated for what felt like an eternity while Kir softly breathed against the top of his head.

He still felt the need to move away, the fear of what would happen if his parents found out about Kir, but now it was overridden by something else. Quinn had watched Kir and the Nix fight—he’d watched the Nix try to stab his mate, and it wasn’t something he’d ever forget.

What would have happened if Kir had been hurt? Quinn wouldn’t have been able to get him to a doctor in time, and Kir could have died. Just the thought of it, the thought of losing the one mate he’d ever have, scared Quinn to death, but it was more than that. Somehow, Kir had managed to wriggle his way into Quinn’s heart, and Quinn was terrified of losing Kir. It didn’t matter that they were mates—he just couldn’t bear the idea of living his life without Kir in it, even though right now, they weren’t anything more than friends, and even that was a stretch.

It was Quinn’s fault. He knew it, and he knew he had good reasons for keeping Kir at arm’s length, but in the face of the fear at losing Kir forever, those reasons seemed to disappear.

Quinn knew right then wasn’t the right moment to make decisions, though. The situation they were in was extraordinary, and he wanted them to be back at home, warm and well-fed, before facing his growing feelings for Kir and making a decision he’d have to live with for the rest of his life.

Kir groaned and his eyes blinked open. Quinn froze, because he didn’t know what to do. He was still conflicted between staying and moving away, and he couldn’t decide.

Then Kir smiled at him, soft and happy, like he’d forgotten where they were and why, and Quinn broke down. He pushed his body closer to Kir’s, as close as he could, and kissed his mate.

Kir made a soft, surprised sound, but he didn’t pull away. It didn’t matter that they’d just woken up after a hellish night and day, that they both had bad breath and that whatever they were lying on wasn’t too comfortable. Quinn wanted Kir. He’d apparently made his decision without needing to think about it anymore.
