Chapter Nine - Secundae Castle

A meadow outside Castle Secundae

Alicina awoke with a start. The sun was high overhead, and her face felt hot with sunburn. Her body felt weak, and her head pounded with lightning sparks of pain at her temples. Licking chapped lips, she winced and tried to sit up.

Moaning, she closed her eyes and turned over on her stomach, pushing up with trembling limbs until she crouched on all fours. Cracking one eyelid, she saw Roald lying beside her, his eyes closed.

How do we keep ending up in this situation? The wry thought penetrated the fog of her mind, and, wincing, she managed to crawl over to him.

“Roald,” she whispered, shaking his shoulder, “Roald, wake up.”

He was out.

But with his mouth open, it was apparent enough that he still breathed, and she decided to leave him alone for the moment. Her head ached horribly. That is the last time I try a major spell without any preparation. She vowed.

Another moment of rest, her head on his shoulder, and then she slowly raised her gaze to look around. They seemed to be alone in the middle of a meadow. Birds twittered nearby, and a warm breeze blew among the tall grass.

A shout behind her made her turn her head too quickly, and she nearly blacked out again. They were not a hundred yards from a stone castle, and upon it stood a guard who pointed their direction.

Shit.

“Roald, we’ve got to go…” she trailed off. She could not have gotten to her feet, not in her current state, and unconscious as he was, there was no stirring him.

Soon, hoofbeats sounded, and she saw two riders in uniform pounding up a hidden road toward her. Her heart pounded, and she pushed off the ground, meaning to meet them on her feet at least. Her legs refused to cooperate, and she fell beside Roald once more. A flare of pain blinded her for a moment, and when her vision cleared, the guards were dismounting and reaching for her.

“Milady, are you alright?” One gazed down at her, blocking out the sun. She closed her eyes, leaning back on Roald’s chest, and knew nothing else.

After soaking in the bath for nearly an hour, Alicina found herself sitting in a high-backed leather seat beside the crackling fire, a mug of warm mead clutched in both hands. Roald sat similarly bundled in a soft lambs-wool blanket opposite her by the hearth.

Sofie of Secundae was staring at him wide-eyed as Roald told her the tale of their last few days, including the uncertain fate of her brother.

Without being told, Alicina would have guessed the two were siblings. Benj had been gangly despite his knight training, and the two shared the same copper hair and green-gray eyes. Though nowhere near her brother’s six feet in height, Sofie was willowy and tall for a teenage girl.

“So we took our chances,” Roald was saying, “I had hoped her spell would take us near Aestas Palace, but I’m afraid our detour is my fault.
